A first subproject is aimed at enhancing the value of the rocks that provided material for the construction of the monuments of the Camino de Santiago (French Way in Galicia and Primitive Way and the coast in Asturias and Cantabria). Starting with the study of the most emblematic monuments along the way, it would focus on locating and valuing, as part of the joint heritage, the historic quarries, contributing a new vision of geology and mining activities to this route.
The BDMIN review, and other available information, will serve to update the national database of ponds and tailings, with a view to the possible development of a project aimed at establishing the current status, situation, and characterization of the ponds and tailings. mining. These previous cabinet actions would be a first step to focus the incipient interest in the industrial use of these accumulations of materials that, with current techniques, or those that can be developed with their study, can serve as a source of wealth and use.
The third subproject would use the BDMIN review as a starting point and would be focused on the realization of the economic geology that accompanies the reports of the Magna 1:50,000 sheets, currently in execution through an internal IGME project: Geological sheets at scale 1 :50,000 numbers 13 (Avilés), 14 (Gijón), 15 (Lastres), 29 (Oviedo) and 30 (Villaviciosa) and Geological Sheet at scale 1:200,000 number 3 (Oviedo).
The Project aims to promote research on mineral resources in the northern part of Spain (Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria) based on the information that, mainly, the IGME stores in its databases.
With the starting information from BDMIN, which will be reviewed, updated and homogenized, a first inventory of mining points will be carried out that will serve to prepare various subprojects pending possible external financing.
The time elapsed since the last update of this database (2005 in Cantabria, 2010 in Galicia and 2012 in Asturias) justifies, at least, a review of the quarries that are active to give a current vision of the industry in northern Spain, especially considering that the economic crisis suffered in recent years has significantly changed the activity of many of them.
