Multidisciplinary Department able to investigate, produce, combine and transfer reference and multiscale geological information. Its objectives and activities are crucial for improving;
(i) the use and sustainable management of resources (e.g. water, energy, minerals),
(ii) the prediction and adaptation to the impacts of climate change,
(iii) the anticipation and mitigation against natural risks, and
(iv) the planning and transfer of knowledge to other Earth Science disciplines, the productive sector and society.
Our main objectives are:
Development and creation of geological maps and implementation of new geological information models.
Generation of 2D and 3D geological knowledge of the subsurface by integrating geological and geophysical data (gravimetry, magnetometry, passive seismic, geophysical logging, paleomagnetism, among others).
Analysis of tectonic processes and their influence on the distribution of geological resources (water, minerals, energy) and geological storages.
Geochemical, petrological and geodynamic studies of the Earth's lithosphere and geochronology of igneous and metamorphic complexes.
Knowledge of marine geological resources (minerals, energy, and geo-habitats) and hydrochemical and bio-geochemical studies of extreme environments (submarine hydrothermal systems, acidic waters formed in mining environments).
Study of fossils, reconstruction of past environments and diversification/extinction events and application of new techniques and methodologies in the study of the history of life on the Earth.
