On June 29, 2021, the “Resolution of the Governing Council of the CSIC approving the basic structure and operation of the national centres and the central organization of the CSIC” was approved, establishing a transitional organizational structure of the IGME constituted by:
- Direction: Mrs Ana Maria Alonso Zarza
- Scientific Vice-direction: Mr José Antonio Fernández Merodo
- Technical Vice-direction: Mrs Maria Teresa Lopez Lopez
Likewise, by the provisions of section One.2 of the Resolution mentioned above, on October 24, 2021, the CSIC presidency established an internal departmental structure at the IGME made up of 4 departments:
- Department of Geological Resources for the Ecological Transition.
- Department of Geological Risks and Climate Change
- Department of Geology and Subsoil
- Water and Global Change Department
The IGME has the National Geological Service also. The coordination of this service falls to the person of Mr José Luis García Lobón.
In addition, located outside Madrid, the IGME has 12 Territorial Units outside Madrid, a test Lithotheque in Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo (Córdoba) and the Fardes River Valley Paleontological Station (Fonelas, Granada).

The IGME Lithotheque manages the conservation of core samples from drilling and geochemical exploration obtained in research projects in Spain.
