International conference Fringe 2023

Presentation of the poster ‘Measuring Post-Emplacement Lava Deformation in La Palma With InSAR’ at the FRINGE 2023 conference, Leeds, United Kingdom.

In this work, we present and discuss preliminary results of the deformation of the lava deposited during the eruption on the western flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano (La Palma), using multi-temporal InSAR techniques. The main motivation is to understand the primary process causing subsidence and its potential impact on recently constructed roads over the lava field. We processed 47 ascending and 48 descending SAR images from the Sentinel-1 satellite, covering the period from the end of the eruption (December 2021) to August 2023. We detected vertical subsidence rates of up to 22 cm/year and observed that this rate increases with the thickness of the lava flow. We will continue to study these deformations to determine the underlying process, starting with exploring thermal models for lava flow cooling.
