Open pit at Cerro Colorado, Riotinto, Huelva. The gossan was mined for gold, silver and other elements.
Cerro Colorado is one of the largest open-pit mines in Europe, covering a surface of 4,2 km2. It is located in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, South-Portuguese Zone of the Iberian Massif, one of the most important metallogenic provinces in the world, which probably contains the highest concentration of sulphides in the earth's crust.
It is a polymetallic massive sulphide deposit, whose main ore reserve is copper. The metal extracted from this mine contributes to our country's position as the second/third largest copper producer in the European Union.
