Institutional Database Service

Code: 122100
Technical Vice Direction

Summary

The main objective of the Institutional Databases service is to store, manage and facilitate access to the geoscientific information produced at the IGME.

The Institutional Databases Service manages and stores more than 40 databases and around 11,000 documents. Its work focuses on facilitating the loading, modelling according to standards, management and custody of geoscientific information from different research projects, thus ensuring the transfer of information to society.

Working areas

  • Geoscientific data storage: Facilitating the efficient storage of geospatial, documentary and management datasets.
  • Data Integration: through the use of ETL tools, among other processes, geoscientific information from different sources is migrated, adapting it to the models and management systems used at the IGME, thus allowing access to complete datasets.
  • Interoperability: guaranteeing the interoperability of data by using standard models and common formats. In this sense, the team is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of IGME data harvesting services for pan-European databases such as MIN4EU (Mineral Resources) or SEADATANET (Marine Geology).
  • Efficient Access: implement efficient and secure mechanisms for internal and external consultation of data.
  • Updating and Maintenance: provide a framework for the continuous updating and maintenance of the databases.
  • Close collaboration with the Information Systems Development and Dissemination Unit for the generation of new applications, both for the institution and for research projects, which allow the dissemination of the information housed in our databases.

Research and technical lines

  • NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or Hadoop.
  • Application of Machine Learning techniques to existing IGME datasets for the generation of supervised and unsupervised models.
  • Generative AI tools for software development, such as GitHub Copilot.

Competences and abilities

The Institutional Databases Service is composed of four Senior Specialised Technicians from OPIS and one M3 contract worker who combine experience in:

  • Database schema design and data modelling, including adaptation to standardised models, including the use of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tools such as FME.
  • The most popular database management systems (DBMS) are Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, and PostgreSQL—software updates and patch management.
  • Advanced SQL skills and understanding of DBMS-specific query languages.
  • Database administration:

- Installation, configuration and maintenance of database management systems.

- Management of database users, roles and permissions.

- Scripts and automation tools for repetitive tasks and change deployment.

- Implementation and monitoring of backup and recovery strategies.

- Tuning of parameters to ensure optimal performance.

- Implementation of security best practices and ability to address vulnerabilities.
