Spain exhibits a great geological diversity. The Spanish territory includes the remnants of the Cadomian and Variscan orogens, several alpine ranges and their correlative foreland basins, distensive Neogene basins, and a volcanic archipelago. Geological mapping is the most useful research tool for the study of this complexity.
