The objective of this citizen initiative is to contribute to monitoring climate change in Sierra Nevada. Snow is an excellent indicator of the weather, and with the help of mountaineers we can obtain very valuable information.
Thanks to the National Snow Tracking Program, we have an infrastructure consisting of 21 poles distributed throughout the Sierra Nevada. The exact location and the coordinated are displayed on the map and it can be downloaded from wikilock (https://es.wikiloc.com/rutas-senderismo/ubicacion-pertigas-proyecto-seguimiento-de-nieve-siglo-an -61658512).
This citizen initiative consists of a scientific-sports challenge: Take the maximum number of photos of the poles with snow to extend the existing records over time and send them by WhatsApp to 629938144.
Every year at the end of the season a ranking is published and there are prizes for the most active participants of the season. Participation in this initiative is a very valuable contribution to the scientific monitoring of Climate Change.
This challenge has been jointly designed by staff from IGME and the Sierra Nevada National Park. We have the support of the National Snow Tracking Program ERHIN (Ministry of Ecological Transition), to which most of the selected poles belong, and the collaboration of the FAM, which also participates by financing the awards, as well as the Diputación de Granada and the Ministry of Science and Innovation (SIGLO-AN Project).
