Research:
Victor Sarto i Monteys is a vocational entomologist since he was six years old and started collecting butterflies and other insects. He holds a PhD. in Biology and a degree in Pharmacy from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Barcelona, respectively. His PhD. dissertation (1984) dealt with the ecology and faunistics of a family of nocturnal Lepidoptera (the Noctuidae) of great applied interest, since it contains several pest species that affect agricultural crops and forest ecosystems.

He made a three-years postdoctoral stay at James Cook University (Australia) where he studied the relationship between butterflies and flowers visited by them to obtain the nectar. On his return to Spain in 1990, he joined as an entomologist at the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Generalitat of Catalonia, dealing with the biology and diagnostics of plant pests, especially those recently introduced in Catalonia, i.e. invasive pests. As to the latter, it is noteworthy his works on the geranium borer, Cacyreus marshalli (Lep. Lycaenidae) and the Castniid palm borer, Paysandisia archon (Lep. Castniidae).

From 2001 to 2008 he worked at the Centre for Research in Animal Health (CReSA) located at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he combined his work on plant pests (Plant Health) with that dealing with mosquito vectors of diseases in farm animals (Animal Health). During most of these years he studied the vector mosquitoes of Bluetongue (a serious disease of sheep) which are Ceratopogonidae of the genus Culicoides, being in charge of the entomological surveillance program in Catalonia in coordination with the Spanish National Programme. The main vector of Bluetongue, Culicoides imicola was first discovered in eastern Spain by Dr. Sarto’s team, as well as a parasitic nematode of Culicoides, which was a new species for Science (named Heleidomermis cataloniensis).

He is the author of two books (Field Guides) on the insects of Catalonia. He has participated in numerous research projects in entomology, both contracted with private and public companies. He was also selected as an expert entomologist in two PHARE projects financed by the European Union, one with the Czech Republic (2003) and another with Slovenia (2006). So far he has contributed about 150 scientific and divulgative articles in the field of Entomology.

In July 2013 he joined the prestigious Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, which has recently being granted the ‘Maria de Maeztu’ national prize for excellence in scientific research. There he leads the research on invasive insect species.
