Research activities:
Most of my research has focused on solving
geochemical problems, following different
lines of research related to sedimentary
materials and also of igneous origin.
Regard to sedimentary
materials, studies in El Soplao cave
(Cantabria), enabled us to describe a new
type of rock (espeleo-manganese
stromatolites), unknown so far. Moreover,
within these new rocks we have found the
best fossilized microbes in the manganese
oxides of the world and also a new mineral
species (zacaggnaite-3R). We have recently
published the results of geomorphological
study of the El Soplao cave, supported by
paleomagnetic and geochronology data of
these same espeleo-manganese stromatolites.
The last publication establishes chemical
patterns in formation of aragonite and / or
calcite in the cave, necessary for
paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on
speleothems. Using elemental and isotopic
chemistry, we have published the
paleoenvironmental results of microbialites
in microbialites that cover bivalve from
continental jurassic materials of Asturias
(Spain).
Regard to igneous
materials, the study of meteorites has
expanded the knowledge of some specimens
fallen in Spain, such as Reliegos and
Villabeto de la Peña. In 2013 we classify
the last spanish iron meteorite (IAB
complex: Retuerta del Bullaque). The
geochemical study of Torre de Moncorbo
(Portugal) fulgurite (rock formed from a
lightning strike) establishes guidelines in
fusion of granitic materials from lightning
strikes.
Much of the work time
have dedicated to the dissemination of the
main scientific results obtained during the
investigation. For this I used different
means both written (articles and books), and
audiovisual (documentaries), participating
in various proposals for popularizing
science (Science Week, Science Fair,
Researchers' Night, Geolodía, etc.), the
creation of workshops, exhibitions and
development of excursions, courses and
seminars, within the framework of the Mining
Museum. |
