Abstract

A faunule of Middle Eocene Ostracoda from a core hole in the North Carolina coastal plain comprises 13 species of much smaller size than is average for the ostracode fauna of the Castle Hayne Formation from which they were obtained.Of the 13 species represented, about half are suggested to be juvenile forms that lived interstitially in the carbonate sediments until reaching maturity, whereupon they emerged from the sediment as proposed by Williams (1969) for some Welsh intertidal localities. These include forms tentatively assigned to Bythocypris, Neonesidea, Anchistrocheles, Kingmaina, Cytheropteron, Krithe and Cushmanidea. The remaining micro-species of this faunule are suggested to have remained interstitial throughout their lives. They tentatively represent species of Paracypris, Anchistrocheles, Pussella, Kliella, Eucythere and Propontocypris (Ekpontocypris).A striking feature of the micro-ostracode assemblage is its taxonomic diversity. The 13 species are distributed among 12 genera, seven subfamilies and seven families; a feature that probably reflects the vigorous habitat conditions in which the assemblage developed.

Key words: Micro-Ostracoda, Eocene, North Carolina, interstitial.
