There are two short courses arranged at the moment:

PRINCIPLES OF GEOLOGICAL HETEROGENEITY WITH APPLICATIONS
Dr J A Vargas-Guzman (Saudi Aramco)

This one-of-a-kind course discusses basic-principles and cutting-edge concepts of geological heterogeneity. The motivation is that petroleum reservoirs typically yield only a fraction of the resource-in-place because heterogeneity causes incomplete production. Reserve computations are revisited with simple up-scaling operations leading to higher-order parameters. Such parameters also arise in the study of stratigraphical successions and proportions of rock-bodies. Therefore, the course provides a discussion on modern characterization and modeling of complex spatial patterns of rock bodies in the subsurface. After covering basic stochastic principles, the kappa model and heavy-tailed distributions are presented with applications. This course is also paramount to non-linear geo-modelling.

MATHEMATICAL PETROPHYSICS WORKSHOP
Dr.s Geoff Bohling and John Doveton (Kansas Geological Survey)

The mathematical petrophysics workshop will provide instruction in Principles of petrophysical log analysis for a range of geological applications. Although classical petrophysical methods of hydrocarbon reservoir evaluation will be included, particular attention will be focused on general purpose tools for pattern recognition, classification, and prediction, using petrophysical data. The workshop will demonstrate Excel add-ins and Java applets for implementation by participants as freeware, with applications to a variety Of petrophysical and geological problems.
