The
main target for the activities in this line is the
improvement of potential mining knowledge of the territory
by means of the development of infrastructures of
knowledge and information, as well as the investigation
and development of new methodologies and prospecting
techniques, analysis and evaluation of mineral deposits
and industrial rocks. |
Within
the activities of creation and development of infrastructures
of knowledge of mineral resources, those that stand
out are referenced by thematic cartography: metallogenetic
maps of industrial minerals and rocks and geochemistry
cartography. In addition to cartographic activities,
in 2001 an ambitious project has been started up which
final aim is to make available to the scientific and
technical community, and to interested users, the
valuable information about various collections of
samples of mineral deposits that IGME has. Main steps
in the project are cataloguing and structuring the
information, building databases of those collections
to make easier its spreading and look up, and designing
the procedures for the upkeep and management of the
collections.

It is also to be mentioned the growing role
IGME has been playing in the leadership of national
and international investigation projects in
metallogeny and deposits modelling. In addition,
during this year, the Institute has initiated
a new line of investigation almost without precedents
in Spain, about the potential use of the methane
contained in the coal seams as an energy source.
